Cubs Finish With A Sweep Of Bucs

The Cubs finish the Bucs with their first road sweep since sweeping the Nationals in July.  It has been nice to see the Cubs come out and get some hits, I loved this game becuase the Cajun Connection was back in full swing.  How about Fontenot’s over the shoulder catch?  Come on, that was a great play.  He had two hits as did Theriot.  Each with one that had an RBI! Yay!

Then you have Micah Hoffpauir who is maybe flexing a little for some more playing time.  I really like Hoffy and would love to see him get some more time.  He hit his tenth homerun in the top of the fifth, his second in as many games.

It’s about time that Carlos Zambrano got the run support for a win.  Last outing he pitched fantastic, but the Cubs lost because he was given no run support.

So realistically the Cubs are out of the running this year.  There aren’t enough games to really gain any ground anywhere, do they play now for stats?  Go on tears hoping to earn some playing time next year?  Fontenot stepped up his game, getting two hits, a walk that ended up being intentional because they had already pitched him three balls out of the zone and he had some great fielding.  Baker is really making a run for everyday second baseman.  I hope his spring sucks and Fontenot’s rocks so that he gets it, but that is probably wishful thinking on my part.

Next year will be a better year for us and ideally here is hoping the team stays healthy.  Soto is starting to swing better so maybe next year he’ll be out of this sophmore slump and we’ll see more of his rookie year type playing.  I also hope they don’t decide to trade all of our players again, I’m pretty sure that is what hurt us this year.   Good luck tomorrow to the Cubbies against the Reds, let’s end this road stand on a positive note! Go Cubs Go!

End For The Cubs…?

I’m going to make this blog short.  I didn’t get a chance to blog about yesterday’s game which we won in a large part to Milton Bradley.  I’m not sure which side I sit on with him.  I guess I’ll just wait and see what happens.

Ryan Theriot is still amazing, but I think he had one hit in this series with the Nationals. For us to be successful he needs to hit.  I’m really tired of Mike Fontenot getting double switched for Baker, I feel that if we had stayed with him he would have done well this year.  Even giving him more opportunities off the bench would be good.

Oh well, let’s hope that the series with the Mets goes better and we score some runs.  In my previous blog I mentioned the heart of the order not getting it done.  Today it was mainly D. Lee and Rammy that did it.  Ramirez had a two run homerun and Derrek Lee had a homerun.  So if everyone else would have helped we might have won.  Then there was the terrible call at home that should have been called D.Lee safe and he was called out.  Why did Piniella not come argue it?  They wouldn’t have done anything, but show some fire.  He didn’t do anything.  It was irritating.  Riggleman came out several times in the series to talk to the umpires, that is what we need, a manager willing to fight for us.  Piniella used to be that manager…

Tomorrow will be better.  Go Cubs Go!

Soriano and Fontenot Homer Lifting Cubs Past Nats

alfonsosoriano25.jpg  You read that title right, Soriano finally ends long homerun drought in a big way!  A three-run shot that gave the Cubs the lead.

This game was rough from the beginning.  A questionable called strike sent Theriot back to the dugout with a strike out and D. Lee swung right through the power of their pitcher.  The second inning wasn’t much better and this is after the Nats put four on the board during the first two innings.  During the third inning, Koyie Hill hit his fourth double of the season and Randy Wells laid down a very nicely done sac bunt moving Hill to third with nobody out.
ryantheriot22.jpg  Kosuke Fukudome drew a walk and that brought Ryan Theriot to the plate.  Theriot never ceases to amaze me in all that he is capable of.  He launches what looked to be a homerun, but bounced off the wall and turned into a two RBI triple! Theriot’s third triple of the year.  Not much happened for the Cubbie’s until the sixth inning when Derrek Lee hit a ground rule double and Rammy reached on error sending Lee to third.  Milton Bradley struck out for his third time of the game, promptly breaking his bat on his knee and then in walked Soriano.  With the way that Alfonso has been hitting I thought we were screwed, but I’m sure to everyone’s surprise he launched a three-run homerun making the score 5-4 in the Cubs favor.

Kosuke tripled in the fourth, but amazingly enough we did absolutely nothing with it.  In the eighth inning, however, Bradley singled then was caught stealing bringing Fontenot to the
mikefontenot24.jpgplate with nobody on and one out.  ‘Little Babe Ruth’, as Ron Santo likes to call Fontenot, launches his seventh homer into the stands making the difference on our 6-5 win!  This was an exciting game to watch, now let’s sweep the Nationals! Go Cubs Go!

Big Z Doubles And Rammy Hits A Homerun!

carloszambrano26.jpg  When is it okay to intentionally walk a pitcher?  When that pitchers name is Carlos Zambrano then it might not be a bad idea to intentionally walk him! Big Z takes his hitting just as seriously as his pitching, it’s one of the most amazing things about him.  He does it all.  When we were in the American League parks, Big Z did not care for pitching because we used a DH and he didn’t get to swing his bat.  Another rarity about Big Z is the fact that he is a power switch hitting pitcher.  That’s just incredible.

Thumbnail image for aramisramirez8.jpg  It was so good to see Aramis Ramirez hit a homerun.  It is his fifth on the year, but his first since he got of the DL.  I hope this means that his shoulder is completely healed and we can expect more of that from him.  Rammy loves hitting with RISP and he is definitely a power hitting threat.  I loved seeing him hit this ball out of the park.

I was looking for pictures on Yahoo Sports to post here with this blog and was disappointed that there wasn’t one of Fontenot diving for the ball and tossing it from his glove to Theriot who was covering second for the force out that got Big Z out of a very bad inning.  Now that I think about it the only run the Nationals received yesterday was unearned because Big Z walked a batter with the bases loaded.  He definitely didn’t have his A game in the beginning, but after he hit his two run double, he seemed to settle in for a decent outing.

Now, perhaps the play that made every Cubs fans day was Micah Hoffpauir’s catch in the stands.  I can’t tell you the last time I saw Soriano try to pull something like this off.  I wasn’t sure that Micah had a chance, but the fact that he went after it regardless of the ball girl that didn’t get out of his way and the fan that tried to, he made the catch!  It was amazing!  Here are two pictures, one of him in the stands and one of him showing that he had the ball.  I would love to be in the front row and have a ball player land there. lol  Can I choose which player?  Theriot…Fontenot…a couple of the pitchers…hehe.

Let’s go out tonight and win this game so that we take the series and hopefully remain in second.  We are still in this thing and have every reason to believe that we can take our division for the third year in a row! Go Cubs Go!

Cubs Take First Against Nationals

richharden10.jpg  So upon reading some other blogs here on MLBlogs, I realized it kind of sucks watching games just on tv.  lol  It just makes me that much more excited for Colorado next month, hoping that the trip is everything that my sister and I have been looking forward to.

Rich Harden had a great game last night against the Washington Nationals, it was good to finally see him pitching to his calibur.  He didn’t walk one batter and struck out seven.

You know what else was great?  The Cubs, as a team, had ten hits!  That is great!  We need to rack up those hits if we ever expect to win games.

I was sad not to see Fontenot again, I understand that it was a leftie pitcher, but they brought in Hoffpauir to bat against him.  Oh, excuse me, we got to see Fontenot walk onto the field for the bottom of the ninth.  Maybe with the Nationals changing their starting pitcher we’ll get to see him tonight!

In the third, Hill reached second on a throwing error by their third baseman, Ryan Zimmerman, Harden sac bunted Hill to third and Johnson struck out.  Theriot doubled, his seventeenth on the season, sending Hill home and grabbing the lead.  In the fourth, D. Lee doubled his fifteenth on the season and in the sixth he hit a solo homerun.  His bat is really hot right now.  It was good to see Reed Johnson get some hits in this game, I love him and wish he played more, one of his hits was an RBI single.

The ninth inning was rather fun to watch.  Soriano walked, Sam Fuld hit a single while the hit and run was on so Sori ended up at third with nobody out.
Thumbnail image for samfuld.jpg  Koyie Hill singled Sori home and Fuld ran to third.  Fox tapped a ball to the pitcher who bobbled and went for Fuld at home, the tag was late and we scored another run.  On a wild pitch, Hill and Fox moved up a base and Theriot hit a sac fly to drive Hill home.  It was good to see the Cubs get hits with RISP.

I hope that we fair just as well tonight against the Nationals with Big Z on the mound.  What a great way to start the second half, here is hoping it continues just like this so we can take our division again!  Go Cubs Go!
