Cubs Finish With A Sweep Of Bucs

The Cubs finish the Bucs with their first road sweep since sweeping the Nationals in July.  It has been nice to see the Cubs come out and get some hits, I loved this game becuase the Cajun Connection was back in full swing.  How about Fontenot’s over the shoulder catch?  Come on, that was a great play.  He had two hits as did Theriot.  Each with one that had an RBI! Yay!

Then you have Micah Hoffpauir who is maybe flexing a little for some more playing time.  I really like Hoffy and would love to see him get some more time.  He hit his tenth homerun in the top of the fifth, his second in as many games.

It’s about time that Carlos Zambrano got the run support for a win.  Last outing he pitched fantastic, but the Cubs lost because he was given no run support.

So realistically the Cubs are out of the running this year.  There aren’t enough games to really gain any ground anywhere, do they play now for stats?  Go on tears hoping to earn some playing time next year?  Fontenot stepped up his game, getting two hits, a walk that ended up being intentional because they had already pitched him three balls out of the zone and he had some great fielding.  Baker is really making a run for everyday second baseman.  I hope his spring sucks and Fontenot’s rocks so that he gets it, but that is probably wishful thinking on my part.

Next year will be a better year for us and ideally here is hoping the team stays healthy.  Soto is starting to swing better so maybe next year he’ll be out of this sophmore slump and we’ll see more of his rookie year type playing.  I also hope they don’t decide to trade all of our players again, I’m pretty sure that is what hurt us this year.   Good luck tomorrow to the Cubbies against the Reds, let’s end this road stand on a positive note! Go Cubs Go!

Cubs Have Fun In Seven Run First

geovanysoto21.jpg  I am so happy that I got to see this game.  The first inning alone was totally worth it!  The Cubs, as a rule, do very well against the Pirates.  This game proved to be no different.  Theriot began the game with a single, Bradley tried to sacrifice himself with a bunt to move Theriot to second, however, he ended up at first with a bunt hit.  He hustled it the whole way down the line. :) Lee, Rammy and Baker followed with singles then Soto and Fukudome followed that with doubles bringing the score to six.  Scales hit was ruled a single, but it was a gift call for the Cubbies because he should have been out at first making Ronny Cedeno’s amazing play count for nothing, thanks for the gift call.  Dempster came up and sac bunted Scales to second and Fukudome to third.  Theriot grounded out, driving in the last run of that inning.  Seven runs later, the Pirates were in a big hole.

micahhoffpauir15.jpg Later Dempster drove in his fifth RBI of the year with a single and Micah Hoffpauir on his first at bat of the game, first pitch he saw he sent it into the bleachers for his ninth homerun on the year.  Yay!  This game was fun, so the Cubs have won the series now hopefully today we can sweep the series.  My hopes of ever seeing Fontenot again are going out the window as Jeff Baker continues to get multiple hits.  I should be happy, but I would much rather see Fontenot out there.  Maybe next year…  Good luck to Big Z, I’ll have to watch the game recorded as it starts very early here and I’ll be at work.  Go Cubs Go!

Final Score: Cubs 9 Pirates 2

Bats Dead In Makeup Game

ryantheriot32.jpg  Not much to say about this game.  Our bats weren’t just quiet, they were dead.  A couple of errors and no offense stopped Dempster from getting another win.  He didn’t pitch his best stuff, but he had held the White Sox to one run, so it’s sad that in the final innings they smacked us for five.

Ryan Theriot went hitless again, which is still very surprising to me.  I was also surprised to see Jake Fox at first instead of Micah Hoffpauir.  I know that we need Jake’s bat in there, but put him in left and put Micah on first.  Micah is a first baseman and would not have made the error Jake did, but in Jake’s defense he hasn’t played much first.

I am seriously hoping that they play Mike Fontenot and Ryan Theriot together again before the year is over and that I get to see it.  I miss having the Cajun Connection and they haven’t even played together that much this year.  It’s sad, really.

This picture was from the last game in the Astros series and it’s just mean. lol  Derrek is this towering six foot something and you have Mike who is just five foot around eight, he has to jump to reach Derrek’s hand. :)

Congratulations to Derrek Lee and his wife on the birth of their new baby.  I hope the family is doing well.

Now let’s go pound on the Mets!  Go Cubs Go!

Cubs Smoke Astros Behind Randy Wells!

alfonsosoriano33.jpg  This game was incredibly fun to watch!  The Cubs…every one of them, brought their bats today.  We had several homeruns, Soriano belted a three run homer in the first, Rammy homered in the second…can I just take a minute to say how excited I am to have his bat back in the lineup?…and Andres Blanco hit his first homerun this year in the eighth!

The first inning was my favorite because it just showed how every guy is capable of contributing something.  This is how the first inning broke down-

Reed Johnson-single, Ryan Theriot-eighteenth double, Derrek Lee-sac fly Johnson scores and
andresblanco4.jpgTheriot to third, Aramis Ramirez-singles and Theriot scores, Milton Bradley-walks, Alfonso Soriano-three run homerun, Baker walks and on wild pitch reaches second, Koyie Hill singles and Baker scores, Randy Wells-sac bunt.  Every Cub did something to contribute to the game in the first inning and it was amazing!

Hoffpauir had his first career triple in the eighth inning and Fox drove him in after Fontenot walked and Bradley lined out.  This was nine innings of shut out baseball and I’m surprised they didn’t leave Wells in to pitch the last inning, but Atkins did a nice job for us and we slaughtered the Astros!  Hope the Cards lose tonight, Go Cubs Go!

Final Score: Cubs 12 Astros 0

*Side note: Reed Johnson bounced a foul ball off of his foot in the first inning and has a fractured foot.  He is to miss at least a month.  I’m am so sad about this because I was hoping to see him at the game in Colorado.  I wish you a speedy recovery, Reed!

Cubs Pound Nationals For The Sweep!

kevinhart1.jpg  There was no mercy in this game whatsoever.  The Cubs brought their bats and it was almost lights out from the beginning.

Kevin Hart is not an outstanding pitcher, in fact, I was surprised they left him in as long as they did, but he got the job done and was able to help us win the game.  Probably my favorite move that he did was the showing of the bunt and then plunking a single, his first major league hit, into center to drive in his first major league RBI.  That was very exciting and started one of our rallies.  I am disappointed that they optioned Sam Fuld again to triple A, I wish we had a spot for him.

alfonsosoriano27.jpg

Alfonso Soriano and Jake Fox both had homeruns in this game to help our offense.  Micah Hoffpauir and Mike Fontenot both had three hits today, it was just an incredible game.  Pretty much everybody had the chance to play in this game and now we are headed to play the currently hot Phillies.  Let’s hope we take our offense with us!  Good luck! Go Cubs Go!

Big Z Doubles And Rammy Hits A Homerun!

carloszambrano26.jpg  When is it okay to intentionally walk a pitcher?  When that pitchers name is Carlos Zambrano then it might not be a bad idea to intentionally walk him! Big Z takes his hitting just as seriously as his pitching, it’s one of the most amazing things about him.  He does it all.  When we were in the American League parks, Big Z did not care for pitching because we used a DH and he didn’t get to swing his bat.  Another rarity about Big Z is the fact that he is a power switch hitting pitcher.  That’s just incredible.

Thumbnail image for aramisramirez8.jpg  It was so good to see Aramis Ramirez hit a homerun.  It is his fifth on the year, but his first since he got of the DL.  I hope this means that his shoulder is completely healed and we can expect more of that from him.  Rammy loves hitting with RISP and he is definitely a power hitting threat.  I loved seeing him hit this ball out of the park.

I was looking for pictures on Yahoo Sports to post here with this blog and was disappointed that there wasn’t one of Fontenot diving for the ball and tossing it from his glove to Theriot who was covering second for the force out that got Big Z out of a very bad inning.  Now that I think about it the only run the Nationals received yesterday was unearned because Big Z walked a batter with the bases loaded.  He definitely didn’t have his A game in the beginning, but after he hit his two run double, he seemed to settle in for a decent outing.

Now, perhaps the play that made every Cubs fans day was Micah Hoffpauir’s catch in the stands.  I can’t tell you the last time I saw Soriano try to pull something like this off.  I wasn’t sure that Micah had a chance, but the fact that he went after it regardless of the ball girl that didn’t get out of his way and the fan that tried to, he made the catch!  It was amazing!  Here are two pictures, one of him in the stands and one of him showing that he had the ball.  I would love to be in the front row and have a ball player land there. lol  Can I choose which player?  Theriot…Fontenot…a couple of the pitchers…hehe.

Let’s go out tonight and win this game so that we take the series and hopefully remain in second.  We are still in this thing and have every reason to believe that we can take our division for the third year in a row! Go Cubs Go!

Cubs Take First Against Nationals

richharden10.jpg  So upon reading some other blogs here on MLBlogs, I realized it kind of sucks watching games just on tv.  lol  It just makes me that much more excited for Colorado next month, hoping that the trip is everything that my sister and I have been looking forward to.

Rich Harden had a great game last night against the Washington Nationals, it was good to finally see him pitching to his calibur.  He didn’t walk one batter and struck out seven.

You know what else was great?  The Cubs, as a team, had ten hits!  That is great!  We need to rack up those hits if we ever expect to win games.

I was sad not to see Fontenot again, I understand that it was a leftie pitcher, but they brought in Hoffpauir to bat against him.  Oh, excuse me, we got to see Fontenot walk onto the field for the bottom of the ninth.  Maybe with the Nationals changing their starting pitcher we’ll get to see him tonight!

In the third, Hill reached second on a throwing error by their third baseman, Ryan Zimmerman, Harden sac bunted Hill to third and Johnson struck out.  Theriot doubled, his seventeenth on the season, sending Hill home and grabbing the lead.  In the fourth, D. Lee doubled his fifteenth on the season and in the sixth he hit a solo homerun.  His bat is really hot right now.  It was good to see Reed Johnson get some hits in this game, I love him and wish he played more, one of his hits was an RBI single.

The ninth inning was rather fun to watch.  Soriano walked, Sam Fuld hit a single while the hit and run was on so Sori ended up at third with nobody out.
Thumbnail image for samfuld.jpg  Koyie Hill singled Sori home and Fuld ran to third.  Fox tapped a ball to the pitcher who bobbled and went for Fuld at home, the tag was late and we scored another run.  On a wild pitch, Hill and Fox moved up a base and Theriot hit a sac fly to drive Hill home.  It was good to see the Cubs get hits with RISP.

I hope that we fair just as well tonight against the Nationals with Big Z on the mound.  What a great way to start the second half, here is hoping it continues just like this so we can take our division again!  Go Cubs Go!

19th Career Homer Lifts Cubs Past Cards

carloszambrano25.jpg  Is there anything Big Z can’t do?  I don’t think so!  He fields, he bunts for base hits, he hits homeruns…he’s a pitcher?!  Big Z has more career homeruns than any pitcher in this franchise and you know he isn’t done yet.  This was the first game of the double header that I didn’t get to see, so anything I put here is strictly off what I have read.

The Cubs really needed this win to prove to themselves that they could beat the Cardinals even though the Cardinals have the almighty Albert Pujols and coming off of the really badly played game the day before, it was a breath of fresh air.  Unfortuanately during this series I only got to see the two games we lost which was incredibly disappointing.

In the first inning of this game, Soriano and Theriot reached base and then Micah Hoffpauir, who has some pop in his bat, drove them in with a homerun to give us an early lead.  The Cardinals ended up tying it and then Big Z’s homer gave us the lead that we wouldn’t surrender the rest of the game.

I bet it was a good one to watch.  Well, now I’m on to blog about the game I did get to watch which sucked because we lost.  It’s amazing that we are in third and at the five hundred mark right now.  I believe that the second half will be much better for us!

All-Star Pitching By Our Sole All-Star

tedlilly.jpg  Congratulations to Ted Lilly for making the 2009 All-Star team.  I don’t think that they could have picked anyone better.  He is really having a great year and though he doesn’t have as many wins as I think he should, he has had a lot of quality outings.  The standing ovation he received today was well deserved.

I didn’t get to watch yesterday’s game, but as we were thoroughly stomped, I’m thinking I didn’t miss much.  However, today’s game was a great one to watch.  Everyone seemed to be picking up some hits, even Soriano had a couple this game.  Derrek Lee and Jake Fox, both went deep.  Fontenot had a couple of hits including a double and Theriot had a couple of hits.  Soto and Fukudome had sac flies…it just worked very well today.  Great job on taking the series and moving up in the division.

Tomorrow marks a hard day for Lou and Jim Hendry.  They have to make some roster moves and I’m nervous to see what they will do.  Aramis Ramirez, Reed Johnson and Angel Guzman are all coming off of the DL which to see Rammy again is going to be the highlight of my day, however, some guys have to go.  I think they should option Baker and Hoffpauir.  Now don’t get me wrong, I love Hoffpauir, but Blanco has no options and our only back up for short, Fuld is amazing on the field and batting.  Fox is a power hitter and even off the bench he is going to be a big help to us.  I know that Hoffpauir is a left handed bat, but so is Fuld.  I’m not sure what way they will go with this, but it’s going to be a hard choice and one I’m glad I don’t have to make.

Let’s kick some Brave’s butt tomorrow!  Go Cubs Go!

Positive Drug Tests and First Homeruns

jakefox1.jpg
jakefox2.jpg  The first inning of this game started out very exciting.  Soriano got a double and Theriot was trying to give them a free out by bunting to move Soriano up, but he ended up walking.  D. Lee flew out and then Fox, standing in as our designated hitter hit his first Major League homerun!  What a way to do it, too!  Three run shot at four hundred and eleven feet!  Way to go, Fox.  He would go on to have a killer game, just being a triple shy of the cycle.

Micah Hoffpauir hit another home run in the ninth, but it wasn’t enough to rally the Cubs.  Hopefully tomorrow we can bring our A game.

Ryan Theriot and Derrek Lee’s hitting streaks ended as neither came up with a hit today.  Well, all I can really say is we are getting runs, just not enough to give us the win.  Hopefully tomorrow against the White Sox we can win.  Fukudome had a couple of really good hits with a double and triple this game, I hope that he can keep his bat hot.

geovanysoto16.jpg

This is the only time I will bring this up and after this brief paragraph I will not mention it again.  Geovany Soto tested positive for drugs during the WBC.  This really disappointed me because I really respect him.  Having said that, he owned up to it and I will still back him up and cheer for him.  Everyone makes mistakes and he would like to get past it, too.

In unrelated baseball news, Michael Jackson has passed away today along with Farrah Fawcett.  Both tragic and hard for me to believe.  Really makes me understand that I am getting older and that I need to start doing things with my life.  My thoughts and prayers go out to their families and loved ones.

Now, let’s go kick some stinky White Sox booty!

Final Score: Tigers 6 Cubs 5
