Astros Falter As Cubs Bats Stay Red Hot

ryantheriot26.jpg  Bats were still blazing in this series win against the Astros.  The Cubs have looked really good at the plate this homestand going 6 and 1.

Behind Kevin Hart, who had some command issues and pinged two batters, the Cubs bats surged.  It was learned after the game that Kevin Hart was dealt to the Pirates in a five man trade.  He wasn’t fantastic, but he did bring three wins to the Cubs and will probably help the Pirates as he finds a home there.

Derrek Lee has been our hottest hitter as of late, sometimes carrying the team on his more than capable shoulders so today when he went 0-4 all I could think was it was about time that the team carried him for a change.

Just about everyone got in on this one.  Fukudome was swinging a really hot bat going 3-3 and pretty close to hitting for the cycle.  He was one of two that had a triple, Mike Fontenot also had one today.  Theriot had a hit that I believe was ruled a double, but he ended up at third on it.  Fukudome and Theriot paced the offense, each driving in four RBI’s.

kosukefukudome15.jpg  Every article I’ve read on the double play that D. Lee tagged out Ortiz keeps saying that it was a high throw from Fontenot.  Which is true, but they don’t mention the fact that Fontenot was air born as the base runner took him out to try to break up the double play.  Now as for the play on D. Lee’s part, we are very lucky to have him on first.  I’m not sure many first baseman make this play, that is just his gold glove calibur over there.  Lee is a tall guy so everyone says he makes a good target out there for the infielders and Lord knows he has saved many an error with his skills.

It was pretty funny because as the bottom of the third inning started I told my mom that the next three guys up were more than capable of hitting homeruns so we might see some more and just after I said it Jake Fox sent a ball to the bleachers and then Milton Bradley followed it with a homerun of his own.  It’s good to see Bradley getting some hits now.

I am so sick of the comments about Mike Fontenot.  I have never seen one person ragged on so much for a hitting slump.  It makes me mad because there are other players on this team that were in slumps or are still in them and people are sticking behind them as they work through it.  I don’t think anyone will be happy with the second baseman no matter who it is because it’s not Mark DeRosa.  I loved Mark DeRosa, I think we were stupid for trading him the Cardinals are lucky to have such a great player, but I also feel that we have a great team and we are now starting to show what we are capable of.  It has been said that the guys on this team don’t feel that we need to do a lot of trading and I agree.  Fontenot had a double and a triple in this game and I was disappointed that Yahoo sports didn’t post a picture of Fontenot.

kevinhart2.jpg  Good luck to Kevin Hart with the Pirates, I hope that your career is rewarding and thank you for the help that you gave the Cubs in your short major league stay with us.

Let’s go beat the Marlins, I won’t be able to watch this game I am volunteering for the Relay for Life tomorrow, but I’ll be rooting for my Cubs hoping that their bats remain hot.  Go Cubs Go!

9 Days Until Game Time!!

Cubs Pound Nationals For The Sweep!

kevinhart1.jpg  There was no mercy in this game whatsoever.  The Cubs brought their bats and it was almost lights out from the beginning.

Kevin Hart is not an outstanding pitcher, in fact, I was surprised they left him in as long as they did, but he got the job done and was able to help us win the game.  Probably my favorite move that he did was the showing of the bunt and then plunking a single, his first major league hit, into center to drive in his first major league RBI.  That was very exciting and started one of our rallies.  I am disappointed that they optioned Sam Fuld again to triple A, I wish we had a spot for him.

alfonsosoriano27.jpg

Alfonso Soriano and Jake Fox both had homeruns in this game to help our offense.  Micah Hoffpauir and Mike Fontenot both had three hits today, it was just an incredible game.  Pretty much everybody had the chance to play in this game and now we are headed to play the currently hot Phillies.  Let’s hope we take our offense with us!  Good luck! Go Cubs Go!

Final Score: Cubs 11 Nationals 3

Bad Calls Set Tone in Cubs Loss

Another disappointing loss.  We had two very bad calls against us, but the first one with Fukudome sliding into second before the ball and getting called out was the worst!  He was running before the pitcher even threw the ball, how the heck did he get called out at second?!  It was ridiculous and you know what is just as ridiculous as the bad calls?  Keving Gregg letting two runs score and really putting it out of reach for us.

Kevin Hart did not have amazing pitching, but somehow he kept us in it.  I don’t know how.  I knew with that call against Fukudome, we would lose.  Every time we get a bad call in the begining of the game, it kind of sets the whole tone for the entire game.  Then to hear that Soto may end up on the DL, it just keeps getting worse.

We are at the five hundred mark and still in thrid, so I guess that is the good news.

Hopefully this off day will recharge the batteries of the offense and we can score some runs against the Cardinals when they come to town this weekend.

Rammy had another hit this game, which is more than I expected so I’m glad to see him getting some hits, when he is fully back, hopefully that will help.  I knew that too many people rested all of our troubles on his shoulders and it was unfair to not only him, but this team.  Because we have a team that should hit.  If Milton Bradley could get going that would really be great.  We are spending a lot of money on him and Soriano for no production that is where it is really hurting us right now.

Not much to say about this game, I wish someone knew how to help this team pick up some hits.  We were getting some yesterday, just not enough in order to score the runs we needed.  Theriot was added back to the game late when Soto was pulled out, he had another multi-hit game and has been one of the constants on this team.  Fontenot did not start in this game, but came in to play in the end and hit into a DP.  The DP was not our friend yesterday with Theriot, Fontenot and Lee all hitting into DP’s.  Congrats to Fukudome for his homerun, the only run we put on the board.  Go Cubs Go!

It’s All Catcher’s in Close Game

aramisramirez6.jpg  This was an interesting game in the fact that the catcher’s on both teams are the ones that supplied the RBI’s.  Brian McCann for the Braves and Koyie Hill for our beloved Cubbies.

With a fractured toe, we had to place Ryan Dempster on the DL meaning Big Z had to pitch on only three days rest.  He did a pretty good job of it, too, he kept us in there just no offense to help him out.  As a team, we were healthy for literally one day.

It was great to see Rammy getting some hits this game.  He had a couple of singles.  What hurt us was the Braves were able to keep our hottest hitter off the bases and without homeruns, poor D. Lee.  There is always today’s game.

The Braves had some amazing defensive plays this game, but how about Fontenot’s in the ninth, robbing them of a base hit.  He had to lay out for the ball and threw to first from his knees.  It was just great defense. :)

Ryan Theriot is one of the hardest guys to keep off the base path’s, but I was worried he was going with no hits until the eighth when he doubled.  Unfortunately we couldn’t capitalize on it, but still I am glad that he was able to get on base.

Today, Kevin Hart is supposed to be our starting pitcher.  I have not seen enough of him to say if this is good or bad.  Hopefully the offense can help him out and we can take the series from the Braves.  Go Cubs Go!

In yesterday’s blog, I said that it was one month from then that I would be at the game, but I was mistaken, it’s one month from today.  One month from yesterday I will be making the long trip to Colorado.  So I’ll start the count down again, from today. :)

Final Score: Braves 2 Cubs 1
