Randy Wells Dominates In Win!
Randy Wells was back to form after a bad outing last time and with some run support he notched his tenth win! The most of the Cubs starters AND he is the first Cubs rookie pitcher to go double digits since Kerry Wood won 13 games in 1998! I love this guy! I hope he earns a spot in the starting rotation next year because there is no doubt that he has what it takes.
In the fourth inning Milton Bradley belted his 12 homerun to put us on top in what had been a scoreless game. Most of the game the Cubs took advantage of the Astros errors to produce runs, it was just great baseball. Soriano singled in the fifth, Baker reached on an error sending Soriano to third and Hill singled Sori in. I have to mention the sac bunt that Wells put down, though Theriot wasn’t able to drive anyone in, this bunt was awesome! It was laid down almost right in front of home plate!
Just perfect!
Bradley, Lee and Rammy all produced another run in sixth and the Astros were held to just one and it was unearned. Wells continues to dominate the Astros lineup!
I enjoyed seeing the Cubbies win again and hope we can string a few more of these together. I was really surprised to see Soriano in the lineup again after getting that cortisone shot in his knee. He had to have been in some pain still, which makes me respect him for wanting to play that much. He had a single in this game which lead to a run, so I’m happy he was there.
Let’s get another W today, I know that we can take this series from the Astros, give me some bragging rights at work because there is one other huge baseball fan and she happens to be an Astros fan. Go Cubs Go!

Dodgers Take First Two
![]()
In the first game against the Dodgers, Gorzelanny didn’t pitch a bad game. He left the game with a two-two tie and then guess what, the bullpen faltered. I want to tell the Cubs to stop intentionally walking guys! Especially if it is to load the bases, every time we intentionally walk someone something bad happens. This time the Dodgers catcher who isn’t batting for anything this year, hit a grand slam!! Stop walking people! The only hitter that I think should be walked is Pujols. Everyone else just needs to be pitched to. Guzman threw a cutter that didn’t cut and pretty much set it on a tee for Martin, end of story.
The second game was even more painful. Ryan Theriot who continues to be amazing, but probably will never get the recognition for it, drove in our only run. Now, this I have to say many times maybe someone will hear me. Play Sam Fuld, PlAy SaM fUlD, PLAY SAM FULD!! Bench Soriano’s sorry butt, nobody else on this team is getting babied like he is.

Soto gets sharing time because he isn’t hitting, Fontenot never gets to touch the baseball grass because he is struggling. Bench SORIANO!! *pulling hair out* Look at these plays by Fuld and tell me he deserves to sit on the bench…I don’t think so. He robbed Manny of a homerun and actually dove for a ball. I haven’t seen anyone in the outfield really do that since Reed went on the DL, aside from Bradley because for all the crap he takes he still

makes some catches in right that I thought we had no business making. The Cubs have stopped playing with heart and it is really taking us in a downward spiral.
I am an eternal optimist, but right now I am thinking I hope next year we can get it together. Randy Wells has pitched pretty great all year, with the bad outing against the Rockies and I believe one other bad one he should have more wins than he does, but he doesn’t get any run support. I really hope next year he is still a strong part of our starting rotation, because next year will probably be Randy Wells jersey year for me. I’ve purchased a jersey for the last two years of my favorites with Ryan Theriot of course being first and then this year it was Mike Fontenot. I have a Kerry Wood one that I bought right before the only game I have ever attended at Wrigley which he was the starting pitcher. So I’m thinking next year is Randy Wells. I really need an outfielder, but it would have to be Reed Johnson or Sam Fuld because I am not a fan of any of our other outfilders. Oh well, I guess I’m jumping on the ‘Maybe Next Year’ band wagon.
The Cubs are on a must win basis now and I really hope we can split this series with the Dodgers. Here is hoping we get better results. Go Cubs Go!

Same Story, Different Day
I don’t have much to say again this blog, the Cubbies lost another one. For some reason we just can’t win at Petco park. We haven’t won a game there this year. I understand the park is bigger than that of the friendly confines, but this is where we need to get better. It’s too bad we don’t have Reed Johnson right now, he has some great range. Then you have Soriano in left who just doesn’t have any defense, even the commentators said if you are going to bloop a ball, right to Soriano is where you want to do it. Sad. Play Sam Fuld! Stop bench sitting the guys who run down the ball no matter what they have to run through to get it.
Derrek Lee had a good day from what I saw. He hit a homerun in the first for his 25th one which is more than he hit last year and then he got his 24 double of the year. Ryan Dempster struck out 10 for a season high and had two hits with an RBI.
I haven’t actully watched the whole game yet, but I checked the score and read the articles on it. Sadly it’s always the same problems. The homerun ball, this game had a two run inside the park homerun and then another one. Not to mention just plain out not getting hits with RISP.
Most fans have given up on the Cubbies, saying wait until next year. I, however, have not given up complete hope. We could go on a tear and take everyone by surprise like the Rockies did in 07′. Win 21 of 22 games to go to the World Series. Stranger things have happened.
It was good to see Theriot back in the lineup and I about died when they said that Theriot has played in 973 and 2/3 innings this year. Yay! He is amazing! He didn’t look like he was feeling one hundred percent, but still good to have him there.
CARLOS MARMOL ASSUMES CLOSER ROLE! Are they freaking nuts? Don’t get me wrong, this guy has some AMAZING stuff, but he has no control whatsoever this year. After last year, I wanted him to be the closer when they traded Wood, but he has no command now. Hopefully he’ll step up and get the job done. Atlest he doesn’t allow homeruns…?
Here is hoping that we can win today and not let the Padres completely sweep us in their park this year. If we lose, chalk it up to a bad outing and win the rest of the games for the year.
I know wishful thinking, but a girl can hope, right? Go Cubs Go!
Final Score: Padres 6 Cubs 3

Again–Gregg Loses Another Game With Homerun
I was a little nervous for this game because Ted Lilly was just coming off the disabled list for his shoulder inflammation and they did a surgery on his knee. I didn’t get to see this game, but from everything I have read he had a pretty solid outing and it was given up by two things–the two things that have plagued the Cubs all year. Lack of run support and Kevin Gregg.
It suprises me that Piniella has waited this long into the year to realize that maybe Kevin Gregg is not the closer that the Cubs need. He has lost so many games for us with the homerun ball that it’s unbelievable. I know the guy has to be feeling pretty crappy, but feeling bad doesn’t win us ball games. Sure Wood blew some saves, but everytime they brought him in I was confident that we would win. Why did we trade him again? Sheesh. They mentioned Marmol as being one of the options and I just laughed, that guy has no control this year. He may not get us the loss by the homerun, but he walks about three of every five batters and then they get a hit every now and again. Oh and the hit by pitch…so if they are patient with him, chances are they can score some runs there.
Derrek Lee hit another triple, this one was a leadoff and Aramis Ramirez drove him in for our only run. I know we left something like ten on base, again. Got to find a way to get those runs in, boys. Give the pitcher some breathing room. You know, seventeen runs is a nice number to let that pitcher just go about his business knowing he has some room to work with if he makes a mistake. Might need all of those if Gregg is closing the game.
Sadly with not watching this game I didn’t get to see my Fontenot, but I watched the video highlight and that was a nice diving start to a double play in the sixth that saved a run. Lilly is very happy with it as you can see in the above picture. It’s nice to know we still have some defense after looking a lot like a little league team recently.
We are now six games out and not much more season left. The Cubs better hit a serious hot streak if we even have a shot and hope the Cardinals actually start losing some ball games. I don’t for see us getting anywhere near where we need to be, unfortunately. Last year we had a winning ballclub and then Hendry traded everyone, so now we have miss matched pieces that cannot possibly make a whole in the last month or so of the season. One thing I fear happened is they took away our chemistry. Hopefully they don’t get stupid in this off season and start trading our starting rotation. It needs to stay with Big Z, Ted Lilly, Ryan Dempster, Rich Harden and Randy Wells. They would be crazy to let Randy Wells go or end up in triple-A, with few bad outings he has been a solid arm in that starting rotation.
Well, here is hoping we can win today. I get to watch it, but I will only get to see the first hour as I will have to go to bed because work comes very early in the morning. Good luck to my Cubbies and I hope that Theriot gets to feeling better soon. I would much rather have him at short. Miles is another one that was really good for the Cardinals, but hasn’t shown much for us this year. Here’s to another day and another chance. Go Cubs Go!

Micah’s Late Heroics Blown By Kevin
This was a pretty entertaining game to say the least. We struck first and had a lot of chances to get more runs, especially when we loaded the bases with nobody out, but once again we didn’t capitalize as much as we could have.
Up until the eighth inning I was thinking that Lou had flipped his lid. They had to have a scouting report that said the Tigers starting pitcher was dominating lefties and it definitely showed throughout the innings he pitched. Once they went to their bullpen our lefties got some hits. Hoffpauir with his two run homer that gave the Cubs the lead in the late innings and Mike Fontenot with a single that was erased with a fielders choice.
It is upsetting to get the feeling that when your closer comes in you are going to lose. It shouldn’t be like that. I know that Kerry Wood isn’t pitching very well this year, it might just be the change in atmosphere, but last year he came in and you knew you had a chance at winning even with just a one run lead. He blew six saves throughout the course last year. Gregg, I believe, has already blown three. I just don’t have the confidence to back him up, of course, maybe last year it didn’t hurt as bad because we were playing so well and could afford to drop a game occasionally. This year we are teetering at the five hundred mark.
I sure hope that Reed Johnson is better soon, Fukudome needs to have a mental break. The guy has one good game and everyone is like he is back, but then he gets nothing again. He’ll draw his walks, but a hitter like Fukudome needs to get those hits.
So in the eighth inning, Micah Hoffpauir hit a two run homerun that put us in the lead. Marmol kept it for us and we went into the ninth, with one out I thought for sure we would be fine and Gregg could have a chance at closing it down. Then they got their two run homerun and we lost. I’m not naive enough to think we will always win in that situation, but once in awhile it would be nice. That being said, we are still in the running and today is another day.
I feel the need to talk a little bit about Brandon Inge. I hope this guy is as standup as he seems. The announcers zoomed in on his new ‘tattoo’ and explained the story. Brandon had made it to visit a kid in the hospital and his name was Tommy. If the story the announcers gave was correct, apparently he told this sick little boy that he was always giving his autograph and that he wanted Tommy’s. He signed Brandon’s arm and Brandon played with it there. The story was sweet and I couldn’t begrudge him the homerun he did hit, hoping that Tommy wanted him to hit one for him. I enjoy stories that take you a little deeper into the lives of baseball players. I think sometimes we forget that they have families and do charity work, much like everyone else. They just happen to go put their uniforms on everyday and go to work playing America’s favorite past time.
Now it’s time to mention Derrek Lee. Yesterday, he hit a double in the sixth inning, not only stretching his hitting streak to twenty games, but it was his 1600th career hit! This guy is on fire, I really hope that Piniella doesn’t pull him to DH. While he is hitting, let him stay in the game. Also, the errors he saves over there at first, we need him.
Congratulations, D. Lee.
Ryan Theriot is also on a hitting streak right now. I believe with his hit in the first inning yesterday that stretches his to nine games. Theriot had a lot of multi hit games last year and has almost done half that already this year, I really believe the things he does for this team is over looked. One day he will break out and everyone will realize how amazing he is.
Let’s win today! Go Cubs Go!!

Wells FINALLY Snares First Major League Win
First of all I would like to say Happy Father’s Day to all of the dad’s out there and to the Cubs who are father’s themselves. I’m glad that most of you will get to see your families before we head to Atlanta for our makeup game.
So it FINALLY happened! I bet Randy Wells was wondering when it would come with only one bad start in something like eight, he was still without his first major league win. Well today, June 21, 2009, is a day that he will not forget. He finally has his first win behind a currently hot batting Cubs lineup.
Ryan Theriot hit his thirteenth double of the season today in his first at bat and then proceeded to steal third base for his ninth stolen base! He was called out on a tag at third that was really close, but I still think he was safe. (I might be a little biased). In the fourth, Theriot slid safely into home on a Derrek Lee fly out to right field.

Milton Bradley hit his sixth double of the season and stretched his hitting streak to ten games, I’m really glad to see his bat heating up.
Derrek Lee hit another single in the fifth inning, driving in a run and continuing his hitting streak to eighteen games! The plays that he was making at first, definitely saved us some base hits today. He is fantastic at digging the ball out of the dirt.
Jake Fox got another start at third base and made some good plays there. Offensively he had a sac fly and a two run double, but the thing that I want to say about him is he plays with so much heart. He really wants to be there on the field, not caring where he is as long as he gets to play. I LOVE that about him!
Kosuke Fukudome had a rough day at the plate again with just a walk, but defensively he was amazing with the diving catch and a running one that I thought was going to be a for sure double for the Indians.
Alfonso Soriano had a single this game that helped to score some runs in our fifth inning. He was running down some balls in the field today, so I’m hoping that his knee is feeling better.
Andres Blanco, no one can argue that this guy doesn’t have some great range. I see him chasing down balls that should have been hits, like the last ball he snared to throw to Lee and get the last out of the game. Just some great defensive moves. He was intentionally walked and he had a single in the eighth that was erased by Soriano’s double play ball.
Geovany Soto…I could not be happier with the way he is playing right now! After seeing him struggle during the beginning of the season, he is really stepping up his game. In his first at bat he hit the homerun, putting us on the board first. He drew a bases loaded walk and threw out a runner. I love having him on our team.
Here is my little paragrah for Mike Fontenot. I know they brought him in at the last of the game, but nothing went towards him so I didn’t get to see him.
Hopefully tomorrow!
Well today’s game marks the end of having DeRo and Woody back at Wrigley and I’m sure they both can say it didn’t go as they had planned. Kerry Wood blew two games and DeRo ran into the bullpen phone. I’m sorry to see them go, I wish that we still had them as Cubs.
We are headed to Atlanta for a make-up game tomorrow and then on to play the Tigers. Good luck to the boys in blue. Go Cubs Go!
Final Score: Cubs 6 Indians 2

Cubs Come From Far Behind To Win!!
Today’s game was met with a nasty rain storm that delayed the start one hour and twenty-six minutes, I’m going to say that is the reason that Harden pitched so horribly. This was the worst start I’ve ever seen from Harden so I know that it’s not something that is going to happen very often.
This game was a pretty big sleeper for us again. The Indian’s pitcher was amazing and our bats were still sleeping. That is until the fifth when Reed Johnson, whom I absolutely love, came to the plate. He must have been tired of the big zero that was on the board because he sent one to the deep bleachers for a solo shot that finally put us on the board. Then in the sixth, D. Lee came up and sent one barely into the bleachers.
In the eighth is when it got really exciting for the second game in a row. We were still down by five runs and really needed a miracle to make it happen, but after yesterday’s game I thought there was seriously a chance that we could win. I never once thought we were completely out of this game.
Milton Bradley singled, Lee struck out and then Geovany Soto hit a double, his seventh on
the year. Fox struck out and Johnson walked the bases loaded with two outs. After a long battle at the plate, Andres Blanco hit a two run single, sending Johnson to third. Koyie Hill pinch hit and reached on an error and Soriano singled! The game was 7-6 with the Indians still on top when we went into the ninth. D. Lee hit his second homerun of the game off of former Cubbie Kerry Wood tying the game. Into the tenth we went. I thought for sure we were going to go into even longer extra innings when Soriano drew a walk with two outs and then stole second base. Then The Riot came through for us again with a bad hopping single that scored the winning run!!
This series brings home two former Cubs that were traded this past season that are sorely missed. Most Cubs fans have no idea why Mark DeRosa was ever traded.
When he was announced for his first at-bat he deservingly received a standing ovation. I was applauding you from home as well, DeRo. Chicago misses you and wish that we could get you back in a Cubs uniform. As for Kerry Wood, he was a fabulous closer for us last year and had pitched some great games in his career. I was very sorry to see him go, too. He had played his whole career with the Chicago Cubs and the very first jersey I owned was my Wood #34 jersey. I still remember the first time I went to Wrigley and he was down on the field warming up, I didn’t appreciate that time as much as I should have. I am glad that he is getting more money with the Indians, but I miss seeing him come out to end
the games. He had very few blown saves for us last year, so mostly when he was brought out you could expect the game to end right there where the score was. This was not a good outing for him, which sadly I have to say is a very good thing for us as D.Lee was able to get the homer off of him.
Alright, now is the time to fit Fontenot in. He was the only Cub player that didn’t get to help in this win.
I missed having him in there, but I did think that Jake Fox did a fair job at third, just glad not many hard hit balls went to the hot corner.
Congratulations to a team that has been struggling and I am so happy that we could win it when we were down seven runs! Just goes to show that the game isn’t over until someone comes out on top in the ninth (or extra innings). Anything is possible. I also would like to mention that I’m really glad to see Geovany Soto coming out of his slump, he is amazing and he just needs to start believing that more so that he’ll continue to see the ball well.
We’ll see you all back at the field tomorrow for another game against the Indians. I won’t be able to watch this one due to a family party, but I will be taping it so that I can watch it later. Go Cubs Go!
Final Score (ten innings): Cubs 8 Indians 7

Blunders Happen
This was an interesting game from the sixth inning on.
Milton Bradley’s bat picked up, but defensively he struggled, hopefully soon they’ll get together and make him the player that he has been known to be. I will admit I was not on the Milton Bradley band wagon because I felt that Mark DeRosa was a greater help to us and Kerry Wood was one of the best closing pitchers around, but seeing the way he plays right field makes me a little closer to jumping on board with this move. He makes some great plays out there and even when he can’t make the play, he runs all out for it, which is something that Soriano is slowly losing over in left. So yesterday was not his best game defensively, let’s just be thankful that doesn’t happen often…in fact, it’s the first time I have ever seen it before. It didn’t cost us a run, it was going to score anyway, but I just hope his head is more in the game today. Upon saying this, I still think trading Mark DeRosa was a stupid move, I’ve followed him with the Indians thinking this could have been our little spark through this hard time with Rammy out.
The Indians said it during spring training, DeRosa is like a team leader. He is the glue that holds the team together, we took away the glue and watched our team fall apart. I think that we have the makes to win some great ball games, but I also think we are choking ourselves. We’re not as patient at the plate and we think that every hit needs to be a moon shot instead of just stringing some singles together.
As a diehard fan, I will ride this roller coaster the rest of my life and think every year that this is the year ‘It’s gonna happen’. In truth, it may never happen while I’m alive. I’m anxious to see the new Cubs move ‘We Believe’, wishing I lived in Chicago so I could have gone to it because there is no way that any theater in Utah is going to release it. Hopefully the DVD release date will come speedily and I can watch it then.
Today is the second game against the Twins and I’m really hoping that we win. Also, I would really like to see them leave Fontenot in for a full game, regardless if the pitcher is a southpaw or not. You don’t take right handed bats out because the pitcher is right handed. Leave him in, see what he can do. If Fontenot throws right does that mean he is right handed? If so, why not learn to bat right handed, too? Be a switch hitter (he already has the hard one down from the opposite side). Then they have no reason to pull him.
This could be coming from someone who is a huge Mike Fontenot fan and would love to see him in every game…
Well, I don’t get to watch today’s game on the tv so I’ll keep tabs on the Cubs website. Good lucky to the Cubbies, hope we don’t lose any balls in the sun today!
Final Score: Twins 7 Cubs 4

Soriano’s RBI Single Wins Game!
This was a black out game for me and I’m sorry I missed it. From the articles I’ve read it sounds like a really good one. Apparently, Randy Wells pitched a very good game (I watched some clips) he seems to have a knack for getting himself out of messes that he created, I’ve really been rather impressed with his stuff.
In reading the articles, Kevin Gregg had a very bad outing and ended up tying the game for us with Soriano hitting the game winning RBI in the ninth. Okay, so if anyone reads this you all know that I wasn’t a Kevin Gregg fan and I was just as angry as everyone else that we traded Kerry Wood and are using Gregg as our closer, but he hasn’t turned out half bad. This has undoubtedly been the worst that his pitched this year, but even Kerry Wood blew saves, it happens. You can be pitching all of your pitches dead on and get blown saves. So as a true blue Cub fan I stand behind Kevin Gregg and know that every time he comes into a game it’s not always going to be like that. Believe me, I miss Wood, too. His was the very first jersey I owned and I got to see him warming up at Wrigley, up close and personal, it was incredible.
With that said, I have read many articles on missing Mark DeRosa, too, having traded him to the Indians. I thought we were crazy for trading him.. A utility player like that? Were we out of our coconuts?! However, look at our players and see how hard they are stepping up to win games. Bobby Scales is amazing! We are very lucky to have him. Mike Fontenot does his job at third…I prefer him in the cajun connection, but he has made some great plays at third and whoever the person was that commented on the Cubs website about trading Micah Hoffpauir needs to have their head seriously checked. Have they actually watched ball games?! He has been one of the main contributors off the bench and we would be stupid to let him go. I say, train him on more positons and use him like Mark DeRosa. The man can hit and the plays he makes at first, like coming down with Theriot’s high throw after he had been hit in the ribs (again), that’s just good baseball.
It took me longer than I would like to admit to get on board with our winter changes, but I’m there now. Some of our pitching staff needs to be rearranged, but I think we are working better as a team, having seen more of each others quirks and getting used to everyone’s style and how about Piniella actually being a manager and telling Soriano to put the ball in right and Theriot to be more agressive and pull…just little manipulations like this to already great players can make them that much better and it says something that they have listened and have shown how well it works.
I’m glad that Piniella spoke out about what the papers were writing about Theriot and steriods. I’ve said it before, it’s crazy to even think that he would do that. Any smart person, athletes are not the only ones that do this, but any smart person would not want to take the chances that the long effects have on something like steriods just to have a few good years of their chosen career. I would rather see someone say I may have not made the five hundred club or even the two-fifty, but I played hard and I played clean. Everything I did, I earned. Not because I enhanced myself in some way. Just from Theriot’s comments you can see the type of person he is, I particularily liked this one…. “Me, personally, I have pride in myself throughout my life on my reputation both on and off the field, and it’s something that means a lot to me,” Theriot said. “I feel like I’ve lived my life right from Day 1. Hopefully, that will overcome a headline like that. It’s tough when others make mistakes and you get dragged into it.”
Plus, any father worth his salt isn’t going to do something that will demean him in his children’s eyes or let them think that drugs in any form are okay. Disappointment through a childs eye is devasting to an adult. You can bet he thinks of his family as he makes choices in life, because it’s not just his life he would screw up and Theriot, your fans know better, your team knows better, your family knows better and most importantly you know better. Just keep doing what you are doing and swing that bat.

Congratulations on your win, boys! I will be in Wendover tonight so I will miss today’s game, but I’m recording it and will watch it on our off day tomorrow. Keep swinging like you mean it!

Bats A Blazin’ in Win!
So the Cubs brought out the Ace on Tuesday to see if we could put another kabosh on losing and he delivered. Not only in great pitching, but showing that he earned that Silver Slugging award. Zambrano almost hit for a cycle in the Cubs win over the Diamondbacks with his 17th career homerun.
Sadly, this was another stinking game I didn’t get to see and it would have been a great one. I’m really hoping to see todays, I was so baseball deprived that I watched the ending of the Red Sox and Indians game which was pretty cool because I got to see Kerry Wood and Mark DeRosa again. DeRosa was having a great game with four hits including a homerun. Alright, back to my Cubbies. In the third inning we were able to get on bases and then Soriano comes up and belts one to the bleachers for a three run shot, AMAZING! Two games in a row. So I’m thinking 3-0, we can definitely work with that. I’m sitting at my computer watching the action through gameday on the Cubs website when Fontenot comes up in the fourth inning and if any of you read this you know that I’m huge Mike Fontenot fan, so just sitting here and then it says in play runs and to my amazement, Fontenot belted a two run homer and I’m thinking, can it get better than 5-0 with Soriano and Fontenot hitting homers in two games in a row. Becasue we all know that Monday, their homeruns were our only runs for the entire game.

It was so great to see them hitting the ball like I know they are capable of. In the fourth inning after Fontenot hit his two run shot, Theriot comes in to drive in another run. Loving the Cajun Connection, I was extremely disappointed that I didn’t get to see this game. Well, here is hoping today will not be blacked out for me and that we can go in with the bats just as hot. I know I didn’t mention the other great hits in here, but I didn’t get to see the whole game as I had to work this morning, but great job to everyone who busted their butts and got the hits yesterday. Good luck to my favorite team!
Final Score: Cubs 11 Diamondbacks 3
